I substantially revised our course that had focused only on CAD drafting by building a major section on digital modeling and rendering. The course employs AutoCAD for 2D and 3D drafting and Sketchup for 3D modeling and rendering. In shaping the pedagogy, I was careful to structure the course to support graduate and undergraduate students, even if they had no experience with drafting. The course starts with the basics but moves quickly and we have seen a wide variety of students from across campus take the course.

This was the first course our program had ever offered in digital modeling and rendering and its impact was felt in our students’ outside design work, our production seasons, and our other courses. Students are also able to apply these skills to our new media design discipline and projects.
