Theatre is an inherently interdisciplinary endeavor. A cast of nine actors may represent a team of ninety collaborators—designers, makers, engineers, technicians and crew—each bringing their discipline to bear toward a common purpose. These disciplines have cognates and allied fields throughout our campuses, not just within theatre programs. The minor in Entertainment Design and Technology serves as a bridge extending to adjacent departments and programs whose students want to apply the skills of their discipline to careers in live events, theatre and themed entertainment.
Because the purpose of this program is to serve students outside of the theatre department, I shaped it with input from professionals in the live events industry, colleagues in other departments and colleges, and students around the campus from engineering, design, fashion and architecture. Before the program was complete, I held an online meeting and listening session with interested students and was thrilled to have more than thirty participants who provided some great insight.
The first two students who graduated with the minor in the spring of 2022, immediately landed positions in the profession, one with amusement ride manufacturer Chance Rides. To provide a resource for student interested in the program, I built a website with information and guidance. I also manage an active Linkedin group that keeps students up to date with course offerings, job and internship opportunities, production experiences, and student news. As program advisor, I also work with the students in the program on curricular issues, finding internships, and career guidance.
