At Ohio State, the STEAM Factory provides a space where researchers from all disciplines can broaden their perspectives, share resources, spark creative research ideas and form collaborations across areas of common interest. One of their primary events is the STEAM Exchange, an interdisciplinary seminar presented on a broad topic.
In November of 2017, I joined my staff colleague Chris Zinkon in a presentation under the theme “smoke and mirrors.” Our presentation centered on the types of stagecraft techniques that create the smoke and mirrors of live theatre. We covered automation, pneumatics and pyrotechnics along with the science and chemistry behind stage smoke, fog, and fake cigarettes.
