My colleagues and I created a new course to help our incoming graduate designers and advanced undergrads build foundational skills in drawing and painting in both traditional and digital media. My colleagues built and taught the first half of the course that covered legacy media. I built and taught the second half of the course that built skills in digital drawing and painting for scenery, costumes and lighting design, using Photoshop as the primary tool.
This was the first course our program had ever offered in digital drawing and painting and its impact was felt in our students’ outside design work, our production seasons, and our other courses. Students are also able to apply these skills to our new media design discipline and projects.
