Wildwood was commissioned by Grandstreet Theatre as an adaptation of the young adult novel by Colin Meloy with illustrations by Carson Ellis. In the play, Prue McKeel’s life is ordinary until her brother is abducted by a murder of crows and taken into the Impassable Wilderness. Joining with her friend Curtis, Prue plunges deep into Wildwood and uncovers a world full of warring creatures, peaceable mystics and powerful figures with dark intentions. We created a curtain of green fabric that covered the proscenium opening, keeping the human world downstage. When Prue and Curtis venture into the magical world of the Impassable Wilderness, the curtain separates and recedes into a forest of green tree trunks that move and drop to reshape the stage. We created a raked midstage and upper platforming to provide maximum blocking opportunities.
